Kozhikode has been dealing with the strain of multiple viral infections, and that has put an excess strain on the health care department and resources.

Kozhikode has recently become a hub for major diseases, as it has been noted that nothing less than 10 cases and four deaths due to the infection of leptospirosis have been reported in the district so far in July, and the number of fever cases too has been rising with the onset of monsoon.
Viral Outbreak In Kozhikode: Hepatitis A and Leptospirosis Reported
The four deaths that were recorded due to leptospirosis, including both confirmed and probable cases, were confirmed in these four regions, namely Karassery, Thiruvangur, Chaliyam, and Perumanna. As confirmed by the data, which is available with the Health Department
The authorities have been alarmed and looking for the possible source for the outbreak. It has been assumed that the onset of monsoon that has brought persistent rain, has resulted in the waterlogging and this is believed to be one of the biggest contributing factors.
Authorities Take Action
Taking into account the grave situation, the officials had issued an alert as early as May and warned of a possible uptick in the cases of leptospirosis cases. Such actions even called for preventive and precautionary measures to help inhibit the growth of infection.
The people who had to deal with and get into murky and deadly water are advised by the officials to take precautions and to ensure they take doxycycline tablets.
Parallel Fever Outbreak Threatens Kozhikode: Hepatitis A Suspected
The ones who are possibly infected by the virus and are experiencing fever, headache, fatigue, intense muscle pain and other symptoms of hepatitis A are advised to seek medical treatment.
Apart from this major outbreak, around 1,000 cases of fever are also being reported daily at various hospitals in several regions in Kozhikode. It has been estimated that the total tally of the people who got a fever since July 1 stands at around 20,000.
Many of the patients have sought treatment for fever at government hospitals. Besides this, the doctors have also confirmed several Hepatitis A cases that are also being reported in various regions in the district. As per the doctors, a large number of the patients in the general wards of both government and private hospitals have reported to have been suffering from fever.
The Rising Strain On the Health Department
At the Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode, it has been reported that condition is getting out of hands and becoming unmanageable with the rising number of cases as many of the patients ate often forced to lie on the floors and at times they could be seen in corridors because of the shortage of beds. The infection has been gripping people of all ages.
Dengue On The Radar
Fever and leptospirosis aren’t the only two diseases that have alarmed the authorities, but the district has also been noting an uptick in the cases of dengue fever as well.
It has been reported that over 100 cases of dengue have been reported since the beginning of the month of July.
The worse affected regions being,Nadapuram, Cheekkilod, Valayam, Thuneri, Vanimel, Cheruvannur, Olavanna, and Thikkodi. What doubles the brunt of the infection is that more than 200 cases of hepatitis A and one death have also been reported in the region. The people are advised to take all the precautionary measures and ensure that they avoid going to areas that are serving as hotspots of the diseases.
