Universal took the top spot at the U.K. and Ireland box office with the release of “Jurassic World Rebirth,” which opened to £12.4 million ($17 million), according to Comscore.
The Gareth Edwards-directed franchise revival, starring Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Bailey, marked a strong return for the prehistoric juggernaut.
Holding second place was Warner Bros.’ motorsport drama “F1,” starring Brad Pitt, which added $4.1 million in its second week, lifting its total to $17.6 million. Universal’s “How To Train Your Dragon” continued its resilient run in third, pulling in $2 million for a four-week total of $24.8 million.
Sony’s dystopian thriller “28 Years Later” took fourth place with $1.9 million, bringing its cumulative haul to $16.9 million. Rounding out the top five was Disney animation “Elio,” which collected $942,496 in its third outing for a running total of $4.1 million.
In the lower half of the chart, “Lilo & Stitch” held sixth with $650,261, taking its total to $48.7 million. “M3GAN 2.0” followed in seventh with $230,958, lifting its cumulative haul to $1.3 million.
“Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” added $229,340 in its seventh week for a total of $35.3 million. Punjabi-language film “Sardaar Ji 3” placed ninth with $212,321, advancing its overall gross to $721,787. Universal’s “The Ballad Of Wallis Island” rounded out the top 10 with $125,655, pushing its six-week total to $2.2 million.
A wave of new titles hits U.K. and Ireland cinemas this week, led by Warner Bros.’ highly anticipated reboot “Superman.” Directed by James Gunn, the film stars David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, joined by Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult and Edi Gathegi. Rolling out in over 300 locations, the new chapter in the DC Universe will be available in 2D, 3D, Imax, and Dolby Vision formats.
Among the international selections, Jonás Trueba’s Cannes winner “The Other Way Around,” starring Itsaso Arana and Vito Sanz, arrives via AX1 Films. Curzon reissues the acclaimed Argentine crime drama “Nine Queens” in 4K, while Zee Studios International bows the Indian romance “Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan,” starring Shanaya Kapoor and Vikrant Massey.
On the family front, “CBeebies Musical – The Great Ice Cream Hunt” offers a younger-skewing cinema outing from Vue Lumière.
Peccadillo Pictures presents “Hidden Master: The Legacy Of George Platt Lynes,” a documentary celebrating the life and impact of the pioneering photographer. Val Guest’s remastered 1957 classic “Quatermass 2” comes from Icon Film Distribution, and Johnny Depp-directed “Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness,” from Miracle/IN.2. Petra Costa’s Brazilian politics documentary “Apocalypse in the Tropics” also lands in limited release via Netflix.
Rounding out the week is “Watch The Skies,” a sci-fi drama from Signature Entertainment, directed by Victor Danell and starring Inez Dahl Torhaug and Jesper Barkselius.
