Lovell’s leadership during the 1970 Apollo 13 mission, which was later shown in Ron Howard’s 1995 film Apollo 13 starring Tom Hanks, helped turn a near disaster into one of space exploration’s greatest rescue stories.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), NASA wrote – “Jim’s character and steadfast courage helped our nation reach the Moon and turned a potential tragedy into a success from which we learned an enormous amount.” They further added, “We mourn his passing even as we celebrate his achievements.”

The actual cause of Lovell’s death has not been confirmed by his family or NASA officials – as of yet. Also, there is no comprehensive record detailing specific health conditions Lovell faced before he breathed his last on Thursday. However, according to repots, Lovell was temporarily disqualified from NASA’s Mercury Seven astronaut selection in 1959 due to a high bilirubin count, which could indicate a liver issue, though this was described as temporary and did not prevent his later selection in 1962 for the Gemini and Apollo programs.

What Happened During The Apollo 13 Mission?
According to the reports, Apollo 13 was meant to be the third mission to land humans on the Moon. However, on April 13, 1970, just two days after launch, an oxygen tank in the command module exploded nearly 3,20,000 km from Earth. The blast crippled the spacecraft, forcing Lovell and his crew, Jack Swigert and Fred Haise, to work closely with Mission Control in Houston to improvise life-saving solutions.
For more than three days, the astronauts endured freezing temperatures, cramped quarters, dehydration, and strictly rationed food. By converting the lunar module Aquarius into a makeshift lifeboat, they managed to conserve power and water until their safe splashdown.
