“Outlander: Blood of My Blood,” the new “Outlander” prequel series, releases its first episode on Aug. 8. Subscribers can watch the premiere episode on Starz‘s premium cable channel at 8:00 pm ET/PT and stream it on Starz.com at midnight. Those who don’t subscribe directly to Starz can also stream it on the Starz add-on on Amazon Prime or Hulu. New episodes will then release every subsequent Friday for the first season’s 10-episode run.
“Blood of My Blood” focuses on the generation before “Outlander.” The series chronicles the love stories of Ellen MacKenzie (Harriet Slater) and Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy), and Henry Beauchamp (Jeremy Irvine) and Julia Moriston (Hermione Corfield), who are the respective parents of “Outlander” protagonists Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and Claire Randall (Caitríona Balfe).
Like the original series, “Blood of My Blood” is a romantic period drama taking place across time and space. The prequel’s timeline is vast, as elements of the story stretch between 18th century Scotland all the way up through World War I on the Western front, demonstrating the franchise’s pivotal theme of love defying all odds.
“Lush, complex, beautifully shot and structured, this prequel is a thrilling addition to a franchise that has enraptured audiences from the beginning,” Variety TV critic Aramide Tinubu wrote in her review. “Prequels and sequels rarely stand up to the original work. Yet, ‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood‘ is a rare gem, glittering brightly on its own. Perfectly cast and well-acted, while honoring the source material, the show retains all the beautiful components that make “Outlander” so beloved, yet stands singularly on its own. Fascinating and detailed, the show highlights all the reasons why the first series was so addictive in the first place, while allowing a brand-new cast to shine.”
“Blood of My Blood” also stars Rory Alexander, Seamus McLean Ross, Sam Retford, Brian McCardie, Tony Curran, Ailsa Davidson, Sadhbh Malin, Sara Vickers, Sally Messham and Peter Mullan. The show is executive produced by “Outlander” showrunners Matthew B. Roberts and Ronald D. Moore alongside Maril Davis and Andy Harries.
