World Contraception Day is a special day that focuses on the importance of spreading awareness about contraceptives that involve a device, pills, procedure or behaviour.
World Contraception Day was first started in the year 2007 by ten international family planning organisations. Now, it is observed every year on 26 September to promote awareness about contraception and encourage individuals to make informed decisions about their reproductive health.
According to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), in the COVID year alone millions of women were denied access to family planning services resulting in millions of unintended pregnancies. It stated, “nearly 12 million women in 115 countries lost access to family planning services, leading to 1.4 million unintended pregnancies resulting from the disruptions caused by COVID-19 over the past year.”

World Contraception Dayis an auspicious day that sheds light on the importance of spreading awareness about contraceptives that involve a device, pills, procedure or behaviour. This day was first observed in the year 2007 after ten international family planning organization felt the urgency to educate women about having control of their reproductive health and also to afford the ability to be an active participant in their family planning.

World Contraception Day 2025 Theme
The UNFPA said in a statement that global funding for sexual and reproductive health is slowly decreasing, which directly erodes the foundation of women’s rights, equity and agency. Therefore, keeping all of this in mind, World Contraception Day 2025 will be observed under the theme “A choice for all agency, intention, access.”

World Contraception Day 2025 matters globally, no matter where you live, as this special occasion allows certain organizations to take a step forward to educate men and women about contraceptives. A device, pills, procedure or behaviour that allows people to attain their desired number of children or determine the spacing of their pregnancies.
Raising concerns about women’s health during pregnancies, the World Health Organization (WHO) states, “Contraceptive information and services are fundamental to the health and human rights of all individuals. The prevention of unintended pregnancies helps to lower maternal ill-health and the number of pregnancy-related deaths. Delaying pregnancies in young girls who are at increased risk of health problems from early childbearing and preventing pregnancies among older women who also face increased risks are important health benefits of family planning.”
Despite every effort to spread awareness about contraception, as per the data available on the WHO, 257 million women of reproductive age in 2023 had an unmet need for contraception. And the reasons for this include limited access to contraception, a limited choice of methods, a fear or experience of side-effects, cultural or religious opposition, poor quality of available services and gender-based barriers.
