Wearing a tight belt for extended periods can be discomforting, and the abdominal pressure exerted can also lead to health issues in the long term.
Dr Tripti Raheja, lead consultant in obstetrics and gynaecology at the CK Birla Hospital, Delhi, added that this pressure might impact male fertility and cause other health concerns. “Firstly, it can increase scrotal temperature, which is critical since the testicles need to remain cooler than the rest of the body for optimal sperm production,” said Dr Raheja, adding that elevated temperatures in the groin area can negatively affect sperm quality and motility.
“Secondly, a tight belt can restrict blood flow to the pelvic region, which may impair the functioning of the testicles and other reproductive organs, potentially reducing sperm production,” Dr Raheja informed.
Additionally, prolonged compression of the lower abdomen and genital area may cause inflammation or contribute to conditions like varicocele — enlarged veins in the scrotum — that are known to impact fertility as well.

“Wearing a tight belt can also cause digestive issues over time,” said Dr Raheja.
Dr Sanjay Prakash J, consultant microsurgical andrologist and Urologist, Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology Chennai, affirmed that wearing a tight belt may have various downsides for men, primarily when it is used for a longer duration or very frequently. “The tight belt puts constant compression around your abdominal area, which can negatively restrict the blood flow. It can further impact the normal functioning of the organ in the pelvic area. This extreme pressure can cause digestive issues like acid reflux, which is a discomforting experience,” said Dr Sanjay.
To mitigate these risks, wearing loose-fitting, comfortable clothing is advisable to promote airflow and prevent excessive heat buildup. “Taking regular breaks when sitting for long hours can also help improve blood circulation in the pelvic region,” said Dr Raheja.

Purchase belts that are not too tight and fit you comfortably, advised Dr Sanjay.
Furthermore, maintaining a healthy lifestyle through proper diet, regular exercise, and avoiding habits like smoking and excessive alcohol consumption plays a significant role in supporting male fertility and overall health.
