Victoria Beckham Discusses Eating Disorders With Daughter Harper

An eating disorder is a serious illness that affects a person’s eating behaviours. While it is normal for some people to occasionally have concerns about their weight or appearance, those living with an eating disorder are fixated or obsessed with controlling their food intake for weight loss, shape and body weight. For former pop star and designer Victoria Beckham, 51, this struggle is one she shares with millions of people across the globe.

The late 90s pop star, who recently appeared on her self-titled Netflix show, ‘Victoria Beckham’, a three-part docuseries, portrays her life and career from the time she joined the popular band Spice Girls and navigating life beyond, including an eating disorder.

90s Pop Star Discusses Eating Disorder With Daughter

During a Call Her DaddyPodcast, Victoria Beckham tells the host, Alexandra Cooper, that she took the time to talk with her daughter, Harper Seven, 14, about an eating disorder before the series’ release. She says, “I’ve talked to Harper about it, obviously, because she’s obviously seen the documentary…And little girls still obsess over food. It’s still a big conversation at school.”

Explaining why she felt the need to have that discussion, the former pop star continued, “I talked to her because I hadn’t seen the final edit until the premiere I thought that this might have been left in because obviously, I knew that I talked about it. And so I just spent a bit of time talking to her about it so she could understand.”

Victoria Beckham Recalling Eating Disorder

Victoria Beckham, who has made her name in the world of fashion, recalled her struggle with an eating disorder during the podcast. She outlines, ” When you have an eating disorder, it makes you miserable. It is sad. It is lonely. It is all-consuming. I was present for many years, but not truly present. And, you know, that’s really tough, and you just gotta talk about it.

“Going into the Spice Girls and having people talk about me so much and my weight…one minute I was Porky Posh and then I was Skinny Posh…it plays tricks with you and I didn’t know what I saw when I looked in the mirror,” she said. “I had no idea. You lose all sense of reality, and it is so consuming. It is so tiring, and it takes over.”

Following the release of the docuseries, the former Spice Girls told Cooper that she has been receiving a lot of good feedback on how many women can relate to her situation. In her words, “What is interesting is I’ve had so many women message me, come up to me after seeing the documentary and say how they can relate…And I think that if my experience with [an eating disorder] and my story can help anyone or encourage anyone to talk, that’s another really good reason to have done this.”

Turning Eating Disorder Into Healthy Relationship

After a long battle with an eating disorder, the fashion mogul shared in the recent podcast how she turned things around in her life to build a healthy relationship with food without confiding in anyone.

She explained, “David has always known that I’ve been very disciplined about the way that I eat, and I managed to turn myself because I was too scared to talk to anyone. I didn’t feel that I could trust anyone at all I managed to do it myself and turn an unhealthy obsession with food into a healthy relationship.

“It’s about being healthy, about working out. And David helped me do that,” she told Cooper. “You know, David was the one who changed my workout around. I was doing cardio, cardio, cardio. All I wanted to do was burn, burn, burn. He was the one who encouraged me to start weight training, and we work out together.”
