Oh, Hi! may be some young couples’ worst nightmare, but star, co-writer and producer Molly Gordon was adamant the project not be a horror film.
During a recent appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Gordon explained that as she was attempting to get the Sophie Brooks-helmed project off the ground, those she was pitching to suggested she change the genre and tone of the movie.
“It’s interesting. We were discussing that it’s such a dark time [in the industry], but horror’s kind of the only thing that’s working,” she said. “But yeah, people would go, ‘I love the movie, but can she kill him at the end?’ But it’s like, when you think of When Harry Met Sally, what if Meg Ryan just killed him at the end? I want some just romantic movies, does there have to be death always?”
In Oh, Hi! a romantic getaway turns sour as Iris (Gordon) realizes she and Isaac (Logan Lerman) are not on the same page about their relationship and its presumed exclusivity. Indignant at the prospect, Iris holds Isaac hostage as she navigates what she sees as a lovers’ quarrel and not the dealbreaker it is.
While Meyers argued there was a “patina” of the film Misery — the Kathy Bates-starring thriller in which she plays an obsessive fan who kidnaps her favorite author and for which the actress won an Oscar — in Oh, Hi!, Gordon described her onscreen character as “10% crazier” than her real-life self, while Bates portrays someone “100% crazier.”
To that end, The Bear actress is also releasing a cover of Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers’ “Islands in the Stream,” featured in the Sony Pictures Classics movie, on Aug. 15, complete with cover art that pays homage to a scene from Misery.
Since its July 25 release, Oh, Hi! has amassed a box office cume of $1.8 million.
