Symptoms Of Measles May Vary As The Condition Progresses

Measles is a highly contagious disease that can result in a life-threatening complication if it is not treated in time. An individual diagnosed with this contagious disease may show a range of symptoms as the condition progresses.

Between 7-14 days after getting exposed to the virus, he/she may show signs like high fever that may spike to more than 104 Fahrenheit, cough, runny nose, red and watery eyes.

The CDC states that 2-3 days after the symptoms appear, a measles patient may notice tiny white spots, also known as Koplik Spots, which may appear inside the mouth. Gradually, in 3-5 days, you may notice small raised bumps may also appear on top of the flat red spots. These rashes may join together as they spread from the head to the rest of the body. Sometimes, measles can cause rare and serious complications like brain inflammation, encephalitis and pneumonia.

Diagnosis And Treatment

To determine if you have tested positive for measles, you should undergo a blood test, or have swabs taken from your nose or throat or pee tests. There is no antiviral for measles, but under the supervision of a healthcare provider, you may use vitamin A, according to the CDC.
