New York didn’t hold a single lead during the second and third quarter, but stormed back with a 12-1 run to start the fourth and go ahead for good. It outscored San Antonio 35-19 in the fourth quarter to secure the Knicks’ first NBA Cup title.
Forward OG Anunoby had a team-high 28 points for New York, while guard Jalen Brunson added 25 points and center Karl-Anthony Towns had 16 points and 11 rebounds. The Spurs had seven double-digit scores led by 21 points from Dylan Harper and 18 from Victor Wembanyama.
A key component of the Knicks’ win came down to second chance opportunities. New York had 23 offensive rebounds leading to 32 second-chance points. San Antonio hadn’t allowed 32 second-chance points in any NBA game since the Los Angeles Lakers had 33 second-chance points in Game 3 of the 2001 conference finals, according to ESPN Research.
New York also received notable contributions off the bench from guards Jordan Clarkson and Tyler Kolek. Clarkson was a team-high plus-15, while Colek was plus-14, assisting in the Knicks’ fourth quarter run.
