You alread know that each time step onto your yoga mat, your breath slows, your mind quiets, and you begin to feel more at home in your body. But are you aware that you can amplify this experience by aligning your yoga practice with the current moon energies and practicing something known as lunar yoga?

The Moon has been influencing the ocean tides as well as our internal vibes since the beginning of time. Just as the Sun moves through the constellations of the zodiac throughout the year, affecting our perception and experience of life, the Moon also transits through these signs every two and a half days, similarly changing your energy and vibration.

Think of your body as a map of the zodiac with each sign activating a specific area and associated energies. As the Moon enters a sign, it turns up the volume on that particular part of your body and its corresponding emotional and spiritual qualities. This means that practicing yoga during a Scorpio moon awakens completely different aspects of yourself than practicing during a Gemini moon.

When you have a basic understanding of these principles of lunar yoga, you can create a practice that will help you experience a sense of flow that extends far beyond your mat.

To make the moon your practice partner, start by learning which sign of the zodiac the moon is currently in. (You can check this online or via most astrology apps.) Then include an emphasis on poses that align with the parts of the body that correspond to that sign. As you practice, set your intention on the related energies.

When you align your movements with the prevailing astrological energies, you activate these qualities in yourself and participate in your own transformation. Throughout the month, as you step onto your mat with these awarenesses, you’ll begin to experience a more authentic expression of who you are.
