What Is Acute Pneumonia?

Pneumonia is a severe health condition wherein the patient develops inflammation inside the lungs due to water and pus. An acute pneumonia is referred to as severe inflammation of the alveoli caused by an infectious agent, resulting in acute respiratory symptoms such as breathing trouble, excessive coughing, and high fever.

“A patient with acute pneumonia develops inflammation in either or both the lungs, making it difficult for him/her to breathe properly. It often leads to the accumulation of pus and fluid within the organ, causing it to swell,” says Dr Swati Raj Singha, Medanta Hospitals.

She further added, “In case the patient is required to be hospitalised due to pneumonia, then it is often referred to as VAP – Ventilator Associated Pneumonia”.
