M Content, the production company founded by Amaya Muruzábal, the creative force behind Amazon MGM Studios’ “Red Queen,” is partnering with leading Irish prodco Vico Films to produce historical epic series project “The Patricios.”
Created and written by Muruzábal, the real-facts based series is set in 1846 and follows the Saint Patrick’s Battalion during the U.S.–Mexico War, when a group of Irish immigrants enlisted in the Texas Rangers deserted the U.S. army to join the Mexican side. They fought until their final stand at San Ángel, when they were captured and sentenced to death.
Director Julián de Tavira (“Like Water for Chocolate,” “Red Queen,” “Hernán,” “Coyótl”) is attached to direct.
“The Patricios” narrates the story of a forgotten war that changed the course of history — and whose consequences still shape the world today.
“It is not just a story from the past, but a deeply relevant exploration of identity, justice, migration and the blending of cultures that continues to define the United States,” Muruzábal argued.
“This is also a rare opportunity for an ambitious international co-production. While English is the series’ main language, Spanish flows through it organically. Born as a Spanish-Irish co-production, ‘The Patricios’ aspires to become a landmark series for audiences in Europe, the United States and Mexico,” she added.
The project counts with the consulting of Italian author Pino Cacucci, the writer behind the novel “San Patrick’s Battalion.”
With more than two decades in business, Vico has become one of Ireland’s leading and most dynamic film and TV production houses. Last year saw the release of Season 4 of Vico’s BBC Comedy series “The Young Offenders,” based on Vico’s 2016 smash-hit film, and the four-part psychological thriller “Dead & Buried” headlining Virgin Media TV & BBC NI’s fall drama programming and handled internationally through All3Media.
“[Vico Films’] international drama experience is essential in bringing to life a story as epic as it is little-known — one that bridges two worlds we rarely see side by side, Ireland and Mexico, while weaving in a true European melting pot, from Germany to Poland to Italy. Though rooted in the past, this story speaks directly to the present, raising timely questions about the state of our world today,” Muruzábal said.
Cormac Fox, partner at Vico Films, explains that this true story “at its heart is the extraordinary journey of a group of Irish soldiers who chose conscience over allegiance — uniting with the very people they were sent to fight, because they believed the cause was just. It’s a timely reminder of the importance of standing up for what’s right in a world that too often feels divided.”
The executive producer and writer of flagship series in Spanish-language fiction like “Hernán,” “Coyótl” and “Red Queen,” one of the most internationally successful series on Prime Video last year, Muruzábal founded M Content in 2024.
Based in Madrid, Buenos Aires and Mexico City, the company focuses on energetic, bold stories and “Latin coolness,” targeting the global audiovisual market.
M Content’s Muruzábal and writer José Fajardo are taking “The Patricios” to the current edition of Conecta Fiction & Entertainment’s Pitch Co-Pro Series, which unspools this week, with the goal of “finding the right partners to bring this story to life as the transnational series we envision.”
“To achieve that – they commented – we are actively seeking strong creative and production partners in key territories for this project—primarily the U.S., Mexico, and Germany — or an international distributor with the reach and vision to take this English-language series to audiences worldwide.”
The 9th edition of Conecta Fiction & Entertainment runs June 16-19 in Castilla La Mancha’s city of Cuenca, Spain.
