The recent immigration updates open the door for Indian citizens seeking permanent residency (PR) to live and work indefinitely while accessing public services like healthcare and education in Finland.
Finland’s permanent residency also allows free movement across the Schengen area, which includes France, Italy, Spain, and Germany, among 22 other countries.
Permanent Residence Status Never Expires
Indians granted permanent residence may not lose the status itself, but they must renew the residence card every five years within the stipulated period. It is important to note that possessing a permanent residence status does not make you a citizen. To acquire Finnish citizenship you need to meet certain criteria such as proving language proficiency and also maintaining continuous residence for a minimum of eight years.
Eligibility Criteria For Indians

- To qualify for permanent residency status you must have lived continuously in Finland for at least four years on a Type A (continuous) residence permit. During this time all paperwork must be maintained for applying for PR towards the end of the fourth year.
- Your current permit in Finland must be based on a valid ground which includes employment, family ties. Before submitting your PR application you must transition to a Type A permit.
- For an employment permit, a candidate must either earn at least EUR 40,000 annually or hold a recognized postgraduate degree with two years of relevant experience. The immigration updates highlight that demonstrating C1-level proficiency in Finnish or Swedish with three years of work experience may strengthen your eligibility.
- And most importantly, you must have a clean criminal record, valid health insurance, proof of accommodation, and no outstanding debts or dependency on social welfare.
