60% Indians between 30s and 40s At High Risk Of Heart Attack, 5 Warning Signs You Must Not Overlook

A heart attack can strike anyone at any age. It is no longer a retirement illness but rather a chronic disease which makes it one of the leading causes of death worldwide.

According to the World Health Organization(WHO), India accounts for one-fifth of these deaths worldwide especially in the younger population

In addition to the previous finding, a new study has now shown that most heart patients are now under the age of 50. What is more concerning is that 36% of doctors report that most patients between 31 and 40 are already facing chronic health issues.

The finding revealed that a heart attack is simply not a medical emergency but a financial one. “India’s cardiac challenge is both a medical and a financial one,” said Rajagopal Rudraraju, Senior Executive Vice President And National Head, Consumer Claims, TATA AIG.

“The growing incidence among younger people means families are often caught unprepared, both emotionally and economically. Over the past five years, cardiology treatment costs have risen nearly 65%. That’s why financial preparedness through comprehensive health insurance is just as critical as preventive care.”

What Increases Heart Attack Risk

Researchers also find that 38% of doctors are now attending patients between 30-year-old to 40-year-old, while a decade ago 87% of heart disease cases affected those over 41 only.

The study attributes the shift of this health crisis to lifestyle disease, stress and sedentary work patterns, which accelerated cardiac risk among young Indians.

5 Heart Attack Warning Signs

According to the American Heart Association (AHA) some of the common warning signs of a heart attack include the following:

  • Chest pain: A classic sign a person can experience while having a heart attack is chest pain in the centre. These symptoms can last for a few minutes, or they may go away and come again.
  • Discomfort in the upper part of your body: Your body may also signal signs of pain and discomfort in arms (one or both), back, neck, jaw and stomach.
  • Shortness of breath: The American Heart Association claims that shortness of breath may occur with or without chest pain and discomfort.
  • Cold Sweats: A person may break out in a cold sweat when their heart organ enters into “fight or flight” stress response.
  • Other Signs: Symptoms apart from the aforementioned signs include nausea, rapid or irregular heartbeat, feeling unusually tired or lightheaded.
