Dengue Outbreak In Bengaluru: In the last few weeks, Bengaluru has witnessed a fresh and sharp spike in deadly dengue virus cases. According to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), the city recorded 69 cases in the past week and 442 cases in July alone. Since the beginning of the year, 1,685 dengue cases have been reported in the city.

Taking cognizance of the situation, on Monday, BBMP Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao urged everyone to stay safe and informed. He also directed civic officials to intensify mosquito-control measures and identify potential breeding sites. He ordered the use of chemicals to control larvae, regular fogging, and pesticide spraying in high-risk areas. Rao also called for greater public awareness campaigns and suggested installing OV traps in households to monitor and reduce mosquito populations.

Before we understand how to stay safe from dengue and other mosquito-borne diseases during monsoon, let us know what exactly triggers the breeding process of these mosquitoes.

Speaking to TheHealthSite.com, Dr Ranjit Rajeev Chouwdhury, Apollo Hospitals, said, “Dengue cases usually surge between May and August due to heavy rains, leading to water stagnation. Pools of stagnant water, often found in flower pots, coolers, discarded tires, and construction sites, serve as breeding grounds for Aedes aegypti, the mosquito responsible for spreading dengue”.

Dengue Outbreak In India: How To Stay Safe?

With monsoon intensifying in most corners of the country, here are some easy tips to stay safe and healthy from various mosquito-borne diseases.

What Is Dengue?

Dengue is a viral infection transmitted to humans through the bite of infected female Aedes mosquitoes, primarily Aedes aegypti.

As per experts, dengue infection is caused by the dengue virus (DENV), which has four distinct serotypes (DENV-1 to DENV-4). The worst part about the virus and the infection is that a person can be infected multiple times by the DENV, once by each serotype.

How to stay safe from the complications that it can cause? Track the signs and symptoms that your body may send when you are infected by the DENV. Here are some of the indicators that say you are infected:

  1. Sudden high fever
  2. Severe headache and pain behind the eyes
  3. Nausea and vomiting
  4. Joint and muscle pain
  5. Skin rash

In case the patient has developed a severe form of the dengue infection, also known as dengue hemorrhagic fever, then there will be some very unusual signs that the body may show up, such as bleeding, breathing difficulties, and organ damage. Warning signs include persistent abdominal pain, vomiting blood, bleeding gums, and extreme fatigue. Health experts advise immediate medical attention if any of these severe symptoms appear.
