Pfizer-BioNTech's COVID-19 Vaccine Side Effects: What Does A Thicker Cornea And Reduced Cell Density Mean?

Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine, which was once hailed as a lifesaver, has been found to have subtle but serious side effects on the cornea, the transparent outer layer of the eye that helps you to focus light to have clear vision.

Scientists in Turkey examined the cornea’s inner layer of 64 patients before and after receiving both doses of the vaccine.

Side Effects Of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 Vaccine

The study titled “Evaluation of the Effects of mRNA-COVID-19 Vaccines on Corneal Endothelium”, which is now published in the Ophthalmic Epidemiology, details that although there was no sudden loss of vision, individuals who took both doses of the vaccine experienced a thicker cornea, reduced endothelial cells in the eye and also imblance in size of the specialized cells that form the endothelium.

According to scientists involved in the case study, Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 Vaccine may temporarily weaken the endothelium, although patients may not suffer from clear vision problems during the study.

Researchers also noted that for individuals with healthy eyes, small changes in the eyes may not affect vision immediately.

Risks Of Changes In The Eyes

The findings reveal that if the changes last for years, they could lead to many conditions, like corneal swelling or blurry vision, especially for those with pre-existing eye problems and those who have had a corneal transplant in the past.

What Does A Thicker Cornea And Reduced Cell Density Mean?

When a person develops a thicker cornea and reduced cell density, he/she may have medical conditions like corneal oedema (swelling of the cornea), bullous keratopathy (fluid buildup in the eye), or corneal decompensation (difficulty in maintaining the front surface of the eye moist).

The study outlines that all of these conditions may lead an individual to permanent vision loss in severe cases and if left untreated.

“Changes in corneal endothelium occur in the short term after two doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech (BNT162b2) COVID-19 mRNA vaccine,” The researchers warned in the study. “Hence, the endothelium should be closely monitored in those with a low endothelial count or who have had a corneal graft.”
