Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla and three other crew members are on their way back home. As per reports, Axiom Mission 4 departed from the International Space Station (ISS) early on Monday and is expected to re-enter Earth’s atmosphere on Tuesday around 3:01 pm IST. According to the Axiom Space X handle, a live coverage of the splashdown will begin at 2 pm IST on the Axiom Space website.

As per reports, Shubhandshu Shukla will have to undergo a mandatory 7-days rehab programme after re-entering Earth’s gravity. This special programme is designed by the experts to ensure that the body of the astronauts (those who have stayed in ISS) is fully prepared to understand the adjustments needed when it’s under gravity. During this time, the astronauts undergo several medical tests as well.

Shukla and three other astronauts commander Peggy Whitson and mission specialists Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski and Tibor Kapu of Poland and Hungary docked at the ISS on June 26 as part of the commercial Axiom-4 mission.

After spending 18 days at the ISS, the astronauts are finally returning home. However, the problem starts when the body re-enters the gravity. Let us understand what exactly happens.

During his stay at the ISS, reports surfaced that Shubhanshu Shukla showed severe signs of orthostatic intolerance a serious health condition wherein the astronaut’s body struggles to regulate blood pressure upon standing after being in zero gravity. Experts say that when this happens, it can often lead to extreme dizziness, severe fatigue, and body imbalance.

Shubhanshu Shukla also revealed that he suffered from muscle weakness – a condition which gets triggered due to a lack of vitamin D. He further added that during his stay, issues such as back stiffness and muscle cramps increased due to the lack of gravitational forces.

Other Health Problems Astronauts Face Due To Microgravity

The human body is used to functioning under Earth’s gravitational forces. However, for astronauts, when they travel to the ISS, this can alter – leading to some health complications that zero gravity or microgravity can trigger. Here are some of the common health issues that they face:

  1. Loss of bone density
  2. Weak muscles due to reduced use of bones and muscles under microgravity
  3. Muscle atrophy
  4. Fluid shift and puffy face – this can make the astronaut’s face swell and look puffy. It can also lead to pressure accumulation behind the eyes.
  5. Astronauts also suffer from cardiac problems. Studies have shown that in microgravity, the heart doesn’t work as hard to pump blood. Over time, this weakens the heart muscle and can cause orthostatic intolerance (dizziness or fainting when standing).

Addressing the media about the mission, ISRO said, “Astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla successfully completed all seven microgravity experiments and other planned activities, achieving a significant milestone in the mission”.

Dr Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of Science and Technology, posted on X, saying the spacecraft’s arrival is planned at 3 pm and that “these timings have a margin window of approximately 1 hour”.
