‘The Dukes of Hazzard’ Jumps 150 Feet Over Kentucky Fountain

During the Somernites Cruise event on June 28 in Somerset, KY., stuntman Raymond Kohn drove a replica of the “Dukes of Hazzard” car known as the General Lee over the town’s fountain square (via Commonwealth Journal). The car jumped 150 feet in front of an audience of fans and locals. According to the local outlet, 35,000 spectators came to show support for the jump, which was inspired by the series, which aired from 1979 to 1985.

The event was held for the Somernites Cruises’ 25th annual classic car cruise, which runs each year between April to October.

“It’s done,” Somernites Cruise Executive Director Keith Floyd told the Journal after the event took place. “Praise the Lord, everybody’s safe. [Kohn] is doing great.”

“You get one shot at it,” added Kohn after completing the jump. “This is a very scary situation. You’re putting yourself in a life-and-death situation on purpose, and I just need to focus on one thing, hitting that ramp, and that’s it. I’ve hit that ramp a lot of times, so…we have a pretty good idea of how the car is going to behave.”

After the jump, several stars of “The Dukes of Hazzard” met fans and spoke about their excitement about the turnout. John Schneider, who played Bo Duke in the series, and Byron Cherry, who played Coy Duke, signed autographs and took photos throughout the day.

“Ray hooked me up with Keith [Floyd], and that’s how I got here, and then Schneider heard about it, and he’s here,” said Cherry. Cherry also spoke about how the show has been able to make an impact on multiple generations and what it meant to him to be a part of the project.

“I have little kids out there, 3, 4, 5 years old … [who] know the show better than I know it,” Cherry says. “It’s just a blessing to be a part of history.”
