NBCU Takes ‘Traitors’ Format Rights for Brazil, Mexico From All3Media

In a pioneering deal, “The Traitors” format rights for Brazil and Mexico have been acquired from All3Media Intl. by NBCUniversal International Networks & Direct To Consumer Latin America.

Allowing NBCUIN & DTC to produce local versions of the smash hit reality competition, the two new local format version pact marks the first format licenses in Latin America sold by All3Media Intl.

With the pact, Mexico and Brazil join over 30 territories that have commissioned local makeovers of “The Traitors,” named K7’s 2024 format of the year.

Over 50 territories have broadcast episodes via tape sales, which All3Media referred to on Monday as a “global phenomenon” and part of its “expansive format slate” which also includes “Race Across The World,” “Lingo” and “Cash Cab.” All3Media Intl. also handles ancillary rights. “The Traitors” is continuing its “rapid international expansion.”

In May, for instance, Prime Video India set a premiere date for its version of the reality series, marking the streamer’s biggest unscripted original to date.

“‘The Traitors’ has captivated audiences worldwide with its unique blend of psychological gameplay, strategy and suspense. Its international appeal is further underscored by the strong demand for both format rights and finished tape across key global markets,” All3Media Intl. said in a statement Monday.

“‘The Traitors’ Season 2 was the reality TV event of the year,” Variety proclaimed in a 2024 review. It doubled down on its casting of established reality performers, pivoted to a week-by-week release, and Peacock itself is just bigger than it was in early 2023, so “The Traitors” could break onto the Nielsen streaming chart. “But mostly, ‘The Traitors’ works because it adheres to one of life’s great principles: It kept things simple, and thereby elevated a genre often dismissed as stupid,” the review observed.

“The Traitors” format was created in the Netherlands by IDTV, an All3Media company, and first aired on Dutch broadcast network RTL 4 in 2021. NBCUIN &DTC Latin America has already acquired all three seasons of the multi-Emmy-winning U.S. version of “The Traitors,” which, All3Media Intl. noted, was  “widely praised” by audiences and critics across the region.

“We have every confidence the brilliant [NBCU] teams [in Latin America] will deliver dramatic, addictive, and immersive versions of ‘The Traitors’ that will captivate audiences across the region— and beyond,” said Yari Torries, VP Latam & U.S. Hispanic at All3Media International.

“With Universal+ Latin America already home of the U.S. version of ‘The Traitors’ across the region, these new adaptations will deepen the impact of Universal+ with audiences across the region,” said Khris Lorenzo, SVP, Content & Acquisitions, NBCUIN &DTC Latin America.
