‘How To Train Your Dragon’ Flies High in U.K.-Ireland Debut


Universal’s “How to Train Your Dragon” dominated the U.K. and Ireland box office over the weekend, opening with £8.1 million ($11 million), according to Comscore.

Walt Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch” moved to second place in its fourth week, generating $1.9 million for a strong running total of $45.1 million. Paramount’s “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” followed in third with $1.6 million.

“The Salt Path” from Black Bear remained in fourth, collecting $804,146 and bringing its cumulative earnings to $8.1 million. In fifth, Lionsgate U.K.’s “From The World of John Wick: Ballerina” added £$788,495, reaching $3.5 million after two weeks.

Sony’s “Karate Kid: Legends” took sixth with $640,665 for a total of $6.6 million. Warner Bros.’ “Final Destination: Bloodlines” landed in seventh, earning $413,677 to bring its five-week tally to $15 million.

Universal’s “The Ballad Of Wallis Island” placed eighth, pulling in $325,998 for a cumulative $1.2 million. Trafalgar Releasing’s “Peppa Meets The Baby Cinema Experience” remained in the top 10 at ninth, earning $208,951 and raising its total to $2.6 million.

Rounding out the chart was Entertainment Film Distributors’ “Clown In a Cornfield,” which brought in $175,969 in its second weekend, for a total of $349,705.

This weekend’s U.K. and Ireland cinema lineup offers a diverse mix of high-profile sequels, international dramas, and family-friendly fare.

The biggest release of the week is Sony Pictures’ highly anticipated “28 Years Later,” directed by Danny Boyle and starring Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O’Connell, Alfie Williams and Ralph Fiennes. Opening across more than 300 locations, the film marks the next chapter in Boyle’s influential post-apocalyptic franchise.

Disney returns to the family space with “Elio.” Curzon brings “Hidden” (“Cache”) back to cinemas, offering arthouse audiences a chance to revisit Michael Haneke’s acclaimed psychological thriller. From Sovereign Film Distribution comes Locarno title “Red Path,” directed by Lotfi Achour.

Three documentaries are releasing this week, including “The Last Journey” from Dogwoof; Frank Mannion’s “A Sip Of Irish,” a look at Ireland’s contribution to the culinary and drinks world, releases via Swipe Films and features appearances from Oz Clarke, Sam Neill, and Pat Shortt; and “Holloway,” the BFI London London Film Festival about the erstwhile women’s prison, directed by Sophie Compton and Daisy-May Hudson, opens through Power Play Productions.

Additional titles this week include Indian films, Dreamz Entertainment’s “Kuberaa,” starring Nagarjuna and Dhanush, and “Sitaare Zameen Par,” starring Aamir Khan, from AA Films U.K.

Rounding out the slate is the animated preschool title “Pip and Posy: Sandpit Friends,” released by Magic Light Pictures.
