According to the airport officials, the Air India aircraft took off at 1:39 p.m. on Thursday from Ahmedabad airport carrying 232 passengers, including two infants, and 10 crew members. However, within just 30 seconds of takeoff, the plane encountered a severe technical glitch – in aviation terms a “critical technical failure” – which led to the sudden failure of both the engines – and a fatal crash.
As per the eyewitnesses, they heard a loud bang before the aircraft veered sharply and nosedived into the densely populated Meghani Nagar area, triggering a massive fireball that engulfed several residential buildings.
“Thirty seconds after take-off, there was a loud noise and then the plane crashed. It all happened so quickly,” Vishwash, who received “impact injuries” on his chest, eyes and feet,” Vishwash told the media – explaining how things unfolded right after the takeoff.
He further added, “When I got up, I was surrounded by bodies. I was terrified. I stood up and started running. Debris from the plane was scattered all around. I was grabbed by someone, placed into an ambulance, and brought to the hospital.”
As per reports, emergency rescue teams rushed to the crash site within minutes, but the fire and debris made operations excruciatingly difficult. Officials have confirmed that at least 30 homes in the surrounding area were also damaged in the crash.
This is one of the deadliest air disasters in India in recent years. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, visibly shaken, expressed his condolences, saying, “Stunned and deeply saddened by the loss. My prayers are with the families of the victims. We will ensure all support is extended to those affected.”
Aviation authorities have grounded all aircraft of the same model pending inspection, while the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and Air India have launched a joint inquiry to determine the cause of the technical glitch.
