From Subtle Mid-Back Pain To Shocking Discovery

As for Ravi, who is an avid runner and fitness enthusiast never imagined that back pain would change his life so dramatically. It all began three months earlier when he started experiencing a nagging pain in his mid-back and escalated rapidly into a debilitating condition. However, as weeks passed, Ravi started experiencing new symptoms, like heaviness in both his legs, a tingling sensation, and an inability to run at his usual pace.

By the time the avid runner returned to India for treatment, Ravi needed an emergency intervention, as the moment he touched down in Hyderabad, he could no longer walk and had to be wheeled out in a wheelchair. The 25-year-old software engineer was later diagnosed with Pott’s spine, called spinal tuberculosis.

What Is Spinal Tuberculosis?

Pott’s disease, also popularly known as spinal tuberculosis is an extrapulmonary form of tuberculosis (TB) that affects about 1% to 5% of TB Patients. According to Science Direct, your spine is the most common musculoskeletal extrapulmonary area of infection in TB. This chronic medical condition can affect your vertebrae, paraspinal abscesses and spondylodeiscitis which may involve your spinal cord resulting in neurologic deficits.

“People with high-risk factors including immunodeficiency (such as human immunodeficiency virus [HIV] coinfection), malnutrition, and overcrowded living conditions, tend to be at higher risk of TB. Adolescents with spinal TB are an at-risk group for contracting and spreading TB in school,” the National Institute of Health (NIH) states. “Treatment and prevention of spread, can include some social distancing, relative isolation, and the wearing of a facemask. Throughout this process, psychosocial support should not be ignored. The most widely used regimen to prevent TB is isoniazid for 6 12 months, while rifampicin or rifapentine combined isoniazid for 3 months can also be used.”
