Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or TV Movie Commentary (Updated June 18, 2025): With 126 submissions vying for only six nomination slots, traditional prestige players like Javier Bardem and Peter Sarsgaard bring star power to the field, with all eyes turning to a teenage newcomer poised to make history.

At just 15 years old, Owen Cooper has emerged as the frontrunner in the category for his emotionally wrenching performance in Netflix’s British drama “Adolescence.” As the fragile and volatile teenage son in a story about trauma and grief, Cooper showcases remarkable depth and vulnerability. His portrayal has stunned critics and awards watchers alike, and should he be nominated, he would become the youngest actor ever nominated in this category. Ashley Walters, another standout from “Adolescence,” is firmly in the hunt. A mainstay of British television, best known for “Top Boy,” could become one of the few limited series this year to score multiple acting nods in the same supporting category.

Oscar-winner Javier Bardem (“No Country for Old Men”) brings chilling gravitas to Netflix’s “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” in which he plays the (alleged) abusive father at the center of the infamous true-crime saga. He’s joined in contention by Nathan Lane, whose nuanced turn in the same project could bring the Emmy regular to the lineup as well.

Over on HBO Max, Rhenzy Feliz has been buzzing all season for his breakout role in “The Penguin.” Acting opposite Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti, the rising star more than holds his own and could earn his first nom if the show performs well across categories. His competition may come from within the same series, with Clancy Brown also in the mix for his menacing turn.

Apple TV+ has a strong slate of contenders, led by Peter Sarsgaard, who delivers a morally magnetic turn in “Presumed Innocent.” Also gaining traction are Wagner Moura and Ving Rhames from Apple’s “Dope Thief.”

Hulu’s “La Máquina” also fields a compelling candidate in Diego Luna, playing a morally compromised boxing manager whose choices drive the drama into dangerous territory. With Luna simultaneously contending for Season 2 of Disney+’s “Andor,” his visibility across genres and platforms could give him a boost with voters and become a potential double nominee.

The Emmys eligibility period ends on May 31. Nomination voting runs from June 12 to June 23, with official nominations set to be announced July 15.
